Probiotic development is handled at the UNIST Research Institute.

In June 2024 we opened the UNIST Research Institute inside UNIST in Ulsan. It is also the secondary site of our Corporate Affiliated Research Institute. It develops probiotic strains by natural adaptation and selection (Naturally Adapted & Selected), and carries out whole-genome sequencing, strain deposit and in-house lab-scale research. Its main work is developing the company's own probiotics; it also generates the data needed to build probiotics-related AI models.

What is done here

Strain development

Probiotic strain development

Making better probiotics is what this institute is mainly for. Strains with the properties a programme needs are obtained through natural adaptation and selection, and each strain is then checked in the laboratory against those properties.

Strains

Natural adaptation and selection

Strains isolated from Korean foods are allowed to adapt naturally as culture conditions are varied, and those with the properties we need are selected. The basis for each selection is recorded.

Genome

Whole-genome sequencing

The selected strains are sequenced end to end. This is the basis for the safety review and for the regulatory dossier.

Deposit

Strain deposit

Finalised strains are deposited with a recognised culture collection; the accession number is cited in the dossier.

Working with ABCI

We supply the laboratory data the AI-Bio Convergence Institute needs for AI GutOS, and test what the model predicts in wet-lab experiments.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the results here go?

Mainly in developing the company's own probiotics. The institute's main work is developing strains isolated from Korean foods by natural adaptation and selection (Naturally Adapted & Selected). Alongside this, it generates the data needed to build probiotics-related AI models and passes it to the AI-Bio Convergence Institute (ABCI).

Does our project's data feed your own development?

No. Probiotics work commissioned by clients is not carried out at the UNIST Research Institute; we find the research institute, hospital or university best suited to the purpose of the project and run it there. Material received from a client, and the results of the commissioned work, are used for that project only and never for any other purpose, including our own development.

Can the deposit number be cited in a submission?

A finalised strain is deposited with a recognised culture collection, and the accession number is cited in the submission. The whole-genome sequence underpins the safety review and the regulatory dossier.
